Hair Color...At Home...

So, you're thinking about coloring your hair....at home. As a stylist I get asked a lot, especially during economic hardships, "is coloring your own hair OK?" I can't explain enough WHY you need a professional to choose your color and apply it for you. Let's break it down:

So, you buy a box of color, it's got this beautiful copper red on the box and that's exactly how you want you color to look, like the red head from Desperate Housewives. You are a natural medium brown. You're so excited!!! You prep, get that old button up t-shirt and mix the products. Shake up that bottle and then go to town. Then you realize, uh oh, this is not going to be enough product. It's OK, I can mush it all together, right? OK, all mushed. Now, wait 30 minutes. You run around and do some chores. Come back into the bathroom and realize...their are red spots all over your bathroom. Shower curtain, toilet, sink, counter...speckled with red. Panic. You try to clean it up, but it's already set in. (Bleaching will just turn it a yellowy orange.) You hop in the shower to shampoo your new color and that big tube of conditioner that came with the color your purchased. (There is a reason you need that big tube of conditioner, your hair needs it after that jolt of high alkaline hair color!!) And now, let's dry it! Ends don't quite look right, like mud and my root area is electric bright. What just happened?

Trust me, this is a familiar story. If you want a new look, please get a professional opinion first, color consultations are normally free!! Just a few minutes of your time and you'll have a clearer outlook of what your new look will look like and how your stylist can take you there. Professional application, you're stylist knows exactly how much to mix, what to mix on certain areas to make your color look even and flawless. Another thing, your stylist has all the tools to fix the problems that can occur when doing color changes. And save that shower curtain!! ;) Cassie
